Why Koalas Have a Stumpy Tail

Long ago, Koala and Kangaroo were good friends. One summer, there was no rain. The rivers were dry. All the animals were thirsty.

Kangaroo said, “Let’s dig to find water.”

Koala said, “You dig. I’m too tired.”

So Kangaroo dug and dug. His arms hurt. His legs were tired. But still, he dug.

At last, water came from the ground!

Koala pushed in front of Kangaroo and drank first. He drank and drank.

Kangaroo shouted, “That’s not fair!”

Koala just smiled.

Kangaroo got angry. He pulled Koala’s long, fluffy tail—hard! It broke off!

Koala screamed and ran up a tree. He stayed there.

From that day, Koala had a short, stumpy tail.

The lesson: Don’t be lazy. Don’t take what others worked hard for.
