Chapter 11: Wendy's Story
"Boys, I have a story," said Wendy. The boys gathered around her.
"Once, there was a gentleman and a lady named Mr and Mrs Darling. They were loving parents with three children. One night, the children flew to Neverland. They had so many amazing adventures!"
The boys cheered.
Wendy continued, "But, imagine how sad their parents were, with three empty beds? Their mother always left the window open for them. After many years, the children returned. Their parents hugged them once again."
Peter stepped out from the shadows, his face darkened. "Wendy, you're wrong about mothers."
Peter continued, "A long time ago, I flew away from home too. I stayed away for a long time. Then, when I flew back, my window was closed and another little boy was in my bed. My mother had forgotten about me."
The boys whispered among themselves. "Are mothers really like that?" said Nibs.
Then Michael said something that horrified his sister, "Wendy, do I have a mother? Or, did my mother forget about me too?"
"Come here", said Wendy, grabbing her brothers' hands. "John, Michael, I think we should go home now."
"Come with us!" Wendy pleaded to the others.
"No," said Peter. "I will stay here and be free." The room was divided. The other boys were unsure whether to stay with Peter or go with Wendy.
But in that moment, BOOM! They heard the terrible sound of cannon fire and the screams of men - the pirates were attacking.
Chapter 12: The Children Are Carried Off
The dawn pirate attack surprised the natives. Within minutes, the air filled with smoke and the sound of sword-fighting.
Princess Tiger Lily bravely fought with her tribe, but there were too many pirates. Soon, she was surrounded. A bullet cut through the smoke, and Tiger Lily fell to one knee. She was hit.
The pirates used a cannon to blow open the door of the Lost Boys' underground home, but nobody was there.
"Find them!" screamed Hook.
The boys were hiding up in the great trees. Hook thought, How will I get them?
From the bottom of the tree, Hook could hear Peter's voice.
"If the natives win, they will beat their sacred drum," Peter told the boys. "That's when it'll be safe to come down."
This gave Hook a brilliant idea. "Find the drum!" he whispered to Smee.
Smee ran across the battlefield to get the drum. Hook signaled for Smee to beat it. Smee beat the drum twice.
"The drum!" the boys shouted. "The natives have won!"
Quietly, Hook told the pirates to get ready. They waited at the bottom of the trees to capture the boys when they came down.
